Music is my companion in good & bad times: Shubha Mudgal

A well-known face of Hindustani classical music, Shubha Mudgal has found favour equally with the puritan connoisseurs as well as the youth. Both criticized and savoured for her unconventional approach of experimentation, undeniably the rich voice of this vocal virtuoso has produced scintillating music. In Delhi to mark the death anniversary of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, this singing diva spared time for a hearty chat with Akrita Reyar of Spicezee.com. Akrita: You said you were a devotee of Urdu poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz… Shubha Mudgal: Oh! Yes. Absolutely. He means so much to me. Probably, more than any inspiration that I have ever had. Akrita:What is that quality that you like in Faiz? Shubha Mudgal:…

Ultrathin, algae-based batteries could charge things you never thought possible

Somehow or another, we’ve figured out how to send mere mortals to the moon, create (and mass produce) a laptop thin enough to floss with and add multitouch capabilities to a mouse. But for whatever reason, we’re still stuck using AA batteries that last approximately one-fifth as long as you need them to. Outside of a few breakthroughs here and there, the battery industry at large has found a holding pattern that digs at consumers and likely fattens the wallets of those in charge. Thanks to new research surrounding the use of Cladophora (green algae) in a flexible, ultrathin alternative, it looks as if we may finally be onto something good. Researchers purport that these super skinny cells could be placed in areas where batteries are currently unable to go — think of perpetually charged wall sensors, energized clothing or even light-up wrapping paper. Better still, prototypes have shown the ability to hold a significant charge, but unfortunately for us all, no specific production date has been pegged. A boy can dream though, yeah?

Archos 5 gets Android Market, Gmail and Maps for that Google-blessed experience

Since it’s not a phone and transgresses in all sorts of other Google-pleasing areas, the Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn’t had a full shot at Android thus far, being relegated to merely the open source aspects of the OS. However, with phones like the Droid out and about and making high-resolution compatibility a must for Android developers, not to mention some diligent work from the hacking community, there are now downloadable versions of Android Market, Gmail, Maps and some other Google-specific Android goodies for the Archos 5. Use them at your own risk, of course, but it’s not like the Archos 5 is a testament to stability in its current incarnation anyway.

iPhone 3GS Supreme is diamond encrusted, spectacularly expensive

Seeing as how the iPhone’s exclusivity status has been slipping, it was inevitable that the bourgeoisie would invent a new way to distinguish themselves from the lowly masses. Enter a designer by the name of Stuart Hughes, already expertly familiar with slapping precious metals onto slightly less precious mobile phones. He classes up a 3GS handset with a 22 carat solid gold body, which he then sprinkles with no less than 190 diamonds. And just to make sure none of the riff raff can get their hands on it, this creation is priced at

Cignias NAO Symphony iPod speaker enables WiFi control with iPhone and BlackBerry

You know what’s annoying? Having to get up and walk all the way to your iPod dock to pick a song. Sure, there’s the good old remote control these days, but you’d still need to squint at the tiny screen from afar if you want any modicum of song control. The couch potatoes at Cignias probably felt the same pain and thus came up with the free MusicNAO app for the iPhone, iPod Touch and BlackBerry, allowing you to control and browse content over WiFi on the iPod docked on NAO Symphony speakers. It doesn’t end there: you can also stream music from the latest iPhone OS devices over Bluetooth, and the same goes for BlackBerry phones but with the addition of WiFi streaming. There’s no word on the sound quality yet, but the adventurous among you can pre-order a NAO Symphony for $249 ahead of its December 1st launch.

By Dana Yates, Special to the National PostNovember 25, 2009 3:04 AM Fact or myth: people with diabetes must follow a special diet. If you answered fact, you’re not alone, says Registered Dietitian Jill Zweig. “T hat’s a big misconception,” she says. “the truth is the same principles [of healthful eating] that apply to people with diabetes also apply to the general population.” It’s a lesson that Zweig frequently shares with clients in the diabetes education program at toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital. As a certified diabetes educator, Zweig teaches people how to make healthful food choices. that means following Canada’s Food Guide, selecting high-fibre and low-fat foods, and eating…
