We’re not sure where Panasonic gets off calling its AG-AF100 a “professional” digital video camera. It’s certainly not in the same class as RED or ARRI Alexa. It is, however, a very interesting video rig for shooting flicks on a budget with its Micro Four Thirds sensor and collection of micro 4/3 lenses, filters, and adapters. The AF100 records native 1080/24p using the AVC/ H.264 Hi Profile AVCHD codec to a pair of SD slots supporting both SDHC and newer SDXC removable media. The AVCCAM HD camcorder features a pair of XLR inputs, 48-kHz/16-bit two-channel digital audio recording, and supports LPCM/Dolby-AC3; it also packs USB 2.0, HD-SDI out, HDMI, a built-in stereo mic, and time code recording. So yeah, it won’t record the next Hollywood blockbuster but it’ll probably do fine by indie filmmakers without breaking the film school budget. Perhaps we’ll better understand all this professional talk when Panny reveals its price in time for a year-end launch.

While iPhone 3G owners and would-be Windows Phone 7 buyers sit in the corner, quietly weeping over their lack of true multitasking, webOS and Symbian continue to point and laugh. In mid-January, a Palm Pre Plus was seen cackling with joy over its rivals’ misfortune even as the device staggered under the weight of 50 simultaneous applications, and less than a week later, a Samsung Omnia HD performed the very same feat, despite having only half the Pre Plus’ RAM (i.e. 256MB) to work with. Now, in what we can only interpret as a large middle finger and “come here” gesture to all who aspire to the cell phone multitasking heavyweight title, we have a video of the i8910 running no less than sixty-two applications thanks to a custom ROM by HyperX. It’s Olympus’ PEN E-PL1, and it’s the first Micro Four Thirds camera from the company to boast an MSRP that you aren’t terrified to tell your friends about. We’ve spent some quality time with one here over the past month or so, and aside from a few minor quirks, we were fairly pleased with the overall package. But let’s be frank — that’s absolutely not why you’re here. You’re here to tell us how you’d change things if given the chance, and how you’d differentiate the E-PL1 from all those wannabes that seem to crop up every other month. Bump the megapixels? AMD might be playing catch-up with Intel at the moment, but at least it’s keeping the distance fairly close. Intel has yet to fully transition its desktop line over to its Turbo Boost-boasting Core 2010 series, yet its competitor has already announced its own, imaginatively titled, competing technology in the form of Turbo Core. It’s a less sophisticated auto-overclock, whereby three of the six cores are decelerated in order to give the other trio some extra voltage and speed for more serialized workloads. The truly impressive thing is that operation under the Turbo Core mode and the default hexacore arrangement will fit within the same power envelope as current Phenom II X4 CPUs, while AMD also reassures its loyal users that the new Phenom II X6s will be compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ sockets. Nice. The table above, provided by AnandTech, confirms the models we heard about a couple of weeks ago, though we’ll have to wait a little bit longer to get confirmation on pricing.
